What is Botox®?

we offer FDA-approved BOTOX® treatments designed to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and across the forehead. BOTOX® can also help soften fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and other areas of the face. By relaxing the facial muscles responsible for creating these lines, BOTOX® leaves you looking refreshed, well-rested, and more youthful. Treatment takes just a few minutes, with results lasting 3 to 4 months.

Beyond cosmetic benefits, BOTOX® can also be used to manage discomfort caused by TMJ dysfunction and bruxism (teeth grinding). This may include relief from migraines, jaw pain, and facial muscle fatigue. However, it’s important to understand that BOTOX® is not a cure, but rather a management tool. Identifying the root cause of your jaw pain is essential before choosing BOTOX® as your first treatment option.

Important Things to Know About Botox® for Tmj

  • BOTOX® Isn’t a First-Line Treatment for Jaw Muscle Pain
Before we recommend BOTOX®, we need to understand the source of your symptoms. For some patients, jaw and neck muscle pain may be relieved through lifestyle changes such as improved posture, behavioral modifications, or stress management. Nighttime teeth grinding may require an occlusal guard. Other conservative treatments can include medications, breathing or relaxation exercises, dietary changes, or physical therapy. BOTOX® may be considered if these options do not provide sufficient relief. Keep in mind: lasting relief starts with identifying and addressing the underlying cause.
  • BOTOX® May Not Help With Emotionally Driven Muscle Pain
Muscle tightness and pain can sometimes stem from stress, anxiety, or emotional tension—not necessarily overuse. In these cases, BOTOX® is unlikely to be effective. Counseling or cognitive behavioral therapy may be more appropriate to help relieve your symptoms.
  • Still Experiencing Morning Pain With a Night Guard?
If you already wear a night guard but wake up with jaw tightness, pain, joint clicking, or locking—especially if you clench down on the guard—you may be a great candidate for BOTOX®. Using BOTOX® in combination with your night guard may provide the best results.
  • Can’t Tolerate a Night Guard?
If you've tried multiple types of night guards and still can’t tolerate wearing one, BOTOX® injections may offer much-needed relief from jaw tension and pain.
  • Enlarged Jaw Muscles?
Overdeveloped jaw muscles from chronic clenching or grinding can create a bulky appearance. BOTOX® can visibly reduce muscle size over time, giving you a more contoured and balanced profile. Typically, three sessions spaced over three-month intervals are recommended. Keep in mind that if the cause of muscle overgrowth isn’t addressed, the enlargement can return.
